MANILA – Kamuning Bakery, which makes the Filipino staple pan de sal the artisanal way, is thinking of expanding next year as it considers a price increase to keep up with the rising cost of raw materials, its owner said Monday.

The store, which has been baking bread in wood fire brick ovens since 1939, may raise the price of its pan de sal to P3 per piece from P2.50, Wilson Flores told ANC’s The Boss.

“Maybe not to match others, I resist eh, I said we should be more resourceful,” Flores said.

“What we do, is we should be very efficient because I want the neighborhood people to still afford us,” Flores added.

Flores said he barely raised prices since he took over the business, using donated firewood to help cut costs.

“We are lucky, anybody in Metro Manila who give us their firewood, we could even chop it for them, churches, school, in their houses. I’m amazed there are many people in Metro Manila who need to clean their neighborhood,” Flores said.

Flores said he revived the bakery out of nostalgia and his love for food. He donates most of the profits and thousands of pan de sal to charity.

“I’m not that serious sa bakery kasi I just love it talaga. Nabuhay siya, naging profitable (it came to life, became profitable), I keep donating and I still keep earning, so I told myself this 2018 I will add more branches, I will be serious to make this bakery a business,” Flores said.
