Air Force pulled off a shock five-set win over a crippled Pocari Sweat side, snapping a seven-game skid while foiling the defending champions’ bid for the other outright semifinals berth in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan yesterday.
Veteran Thai reinforcement Patcharee Saengmuang unloaded a 27-hit game, capping her superb performance with back-to-back hits to seal the Jet Spikers’ surprise 25-19, 24-26, 25-27, 25-21, 15-6 victory over the Lady Warriors.
Air Force also negated American Michelle Strizak’s explosive, conference-best 40-hit effort, including 38 attack points, as the Jet Spikers notched what was only their second victory against eight losses at the close of the double-round elims of the season-opening conference of the league organized by Sports Vision.
The Power Smashers later hacked out a 25-20, 25-23, 25-19 victory over early semifinalist BaliPure Water Defenders to tie the Lady Warriors at second.
The Power Smashers, however, edged the Lady Warriors after finishing with identical 6-4 slates with a higher point ratio and secured the second outright semis seat as Creamline foiled Perlas, 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 25-14, later in the night.
The Water Defenders took the first semis berth with a 7-3 card despite their setback to the Power Smashers.
The third to sixth ranked teams will figure in a single-round quarterfinals sans their elims records for the last two semifinal slots.
