It felt great playing again with familiar people — Jia Morado
Jia Morado enjoyed her outing in Ateneo de Manila’s reunion game with current and former Lady Eagles.
In fact, she looked very comfortable setting up attacks for the likes of former Ateneo teammates Alyssa Valdez, Ella De Jesus, Bea De Leon, Amy Ahomiro and Jho Maraguinot.
The two-time UAAP women’s volleyball champion tallied 58 excellent sets in the Lady Eagles’ 17-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-21, 15-13, win over archrival De La Salle University in the fund-raising Battle of the Rivals Sunday at the MOA Arena in Pasay City.
Morado scored five points and was named Most Valuable Player of the match for Ateneo in the event put up for the benefit of both universities’ athletic scholarship program.
She felt good playing with her Ateneo buddies but admitted that setting for her former teammates, some she last played almost two years ago, wasn’t that easy.
“It took some kapa-kapa and adjustments pero nakuha din namin eventually,” said Morado, the UAAP Season 77 Best Setter winner.
Morado helped Valdez, her Creamline teammate in the Premier Volleyball League, smash 32 of her game-high 36 points from kills while giving De Jesus, who she last played with back in 2015 in Ateneo’s last of back-to-back UAAP titles, a chance to hammer 10 kills for an 11-point outing.
“It felt great playing again with familiar people,” she said.
The Lady Eagles went down 0-2 in the match but showed their heartstrong mantra to comeback and force a deciding set and eventually beat the green-clad rivals that they faced six straight times in the UAAP Finals.
“Um, well Coach Tai (Bundit) just reminded us to play happy and just enjoy the game. Kasi nga in the first two sets, napansin niya na medyo seryoso kami maglaro. And it turned out okay for us naman,” said Morado, whose squad was seen meditating during timeouts and set breaks.
