Is San Sebastian’s Calisaan a dirty player?

DIRTY OR PHYSICAL? San Sebastian’s Michael Calisaan has got to stop doing something – according to San Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez.

San Beda College head coach Boyet Fernandez is a fan of San Sebastian College-Recoletos main man Michael Calisaan.

There is one thing that Fernandez wants Calisaan to do away with, however.

“Ayaw kong magkaproblema ako, pero matagal ko nang kino-complain si Calisaan. I really believe he’s a very good player and I always watch him nga ‘cause I want to find ways to stop him,” the Red Lions’ mentor shared. “But every time I watch his game, I see him punching other guys and nobody’s even making the calls and throwing him out.”

In San Beda’s matchup with San Sebastian on Friday, Fernandez had a front row seat to Calisaan in action.

At the 3:33 mark of the first quarter, the Golden Stag and San Beda’s Javee Mocon were battling for a rebound when the former’s right forearm appeared to hit the latter’s face.

After replay reviews, however, game officials determined that the incident only warranted an unsportsmanlike foul for Calisaan.

Baste’s main man was thankful that replay reviews favored him. “’Di naman po ako siguro dirty player kasi wala akong intensyong manakit. Naglalaro lang po ako,” he said.

He then continued, “Lilinawin ko lang po, hindi po ako dirty player. Go hard lang po ako palagi.”

This isn’t the first time Calisaan has been involved in such incidents as he had already been thrown out of a game a month ago for incurring two unsportsmanlike fouls, both on Emilio Aguinaldo College’s Sidney Onwubere.

The fourth-year forward made it clear, however, that in each and every game, he carries no bad intentions. “Alam ko sa sarili kong wala akong ginagawang masama. ‘Di ko intensyon na maniko kasi nakita naman natin sa replay,” he said.

Still, Fernandez said Calisaan should just stick to showcasing his talents – and nothing else. As he put it, “I really love the way Calisaan plays. I love his physicality, but again, they have to tell the guy don’t try to destroy the other guy’s future.”

He then continued, “I even told him, ‘Hey, you’re a good player, but don’t be dirty. Just play your game.’ He has a good future in Philippine basketball, pero physical lang, wag dirty.”
