MANILA, Philippines — Rachel Peters unfortunately missed the chance to bring the country’s fourth Miss Universe crown but she proved herself as the “phenomenal representation” of the Philippines in the 66th edition of the pageant.
The 26-year-old beauty from Camarines Sur was the first Asian to enter the top 10 of Miss Universe 2017, but failed to advance to the competition’s final five.
Peters earlier entered the top 16 of the pageant as wildcard finalist, even after failing to enter the top four of the Africa and Asia Pacific group.
“It’s such an honor. To represent the country means the universe to me,” Peters told Steve Harvey after her name was announced as one of the wildcard finalists.
Despite the loss of the country’s bet, Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. Chair Stella Marquez Araneta congratulated Peters for her “phenomenal representation” of the Philippines.
“More than your poise and beauty, you are a cut above the rest with your grace and elegance that exemplifies a true woman of substance and an inspiring Filipina,” Araneta said in a statement.
Her feat is the eighth consecutive top 10 finish of the Philippines at Miss Universe.
In her feature video, Peters recalled her love for surfing and the beach. She shared that she just recently opened a cafe in Siargao.
Born in Bahrain, Peters is the daughter of Annie Obregon, a Filipina from Bicol, and Nigel Peters, a British national.
The pageant concluded with South Africa’s Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters as the new Miss Universe, succeeding France’s Iris Mittenaere.
The first runner-up was Miss Colombia Laura Gonzalez, while the second runner-up was Miss Jamaica Davina Bennett.
