A Catholic priest today said the impeachment complaint against Supreme Court Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno should have been dismissed by Congress right away.

Father Jerome Secillano of the Perpetuo Socorro Parish said Congress should have dismissed the complaint since the petitioner does not have personal knowledge of his accusations.

“Congress should stop fooling people,” he said in an interview.

“Just for not having personal knowledge of his accusations, (Lorenzo) Gadon’s petition should be outrightly dismissed,” added Secilano.

Earlier, the camp of Sereno said the House justice committee should dismiss the impeachment complaint filed by lawyer Gadon against the former for being based on “hearsay and perjurious statements”.

Gadon in his complaint accused Sereno of culpable violation of the Constitution, corruption, other high crimes, and betrayal of public trust.

Secillano asked Congress why they dismissed the complaint against President Duterte but did not dismiss the complaint against the Chief Justice.

“Congress did it with Alejano’s petition against the President, why can’t they do it now?” he said.

In May, the House of Representatives dismissed the impeachment complaint filed by Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano against Duterte for insufficiency in substance.

In the past, Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos described the impeachment case against Sereno as a waste of time and taxpayers money.

He said this is because an impeachment would never be “fair and just.”

“Impeachment would never be fair and just. It is just a numbers game, capitalizing on the majority and the president’s whims and political party,” Santos said citing what happened during the impeachment of then CJ Renato Corona.
