BACOLOD City – Anti-crime and anti-corruption group Task Force Crusaders (TFC) sued the provincial engineer of Negros Occidental for alleged corruption, particularly unexplained wealth.

In a letter addressed to Deputy Ombudsman for the Visayas Paul Elmer Clemente, TFC national deputy commander John Chong accused Provincial Engineer Ernie Mapa of violating Republic Act 6713 (Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees).

Chiong claimed in his letter that Mapa allegedly owns eight units of private cars, three units of houses, and a lot in a “high-end subdivision.”

In response, Mapa said he was surprised by the allegation even as denied owning such properties.

Mapa explained that they do use three cars but only one is owned by his wife, while the rest are owned by his wife’s employer, Sealand Industrial Supply.

Mapa said his wife has been working for the company for 15 years.

He also denied owning three houses and a lot in a high-end subdivision, saying that their house is at Goldcrest Subdivision in Barangay Bata here.

But he confirmed that they acquired a new house recently through a loan from PAG-IBIG fund.

“We only have two houses, not three. The houses were bought through mine and my wife’s hard work, so don’t we have any right to at least enjoy the fruits of our labor?” he added.

Mapa said the allegations are baseless even as he accused another capitol engineer, Leo Galvez, of manufacturing the accusations.

“Galvez is a big liar,” Mapa said.

He said his feud with Galvez started after he recommended to Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. that the latter be transferred to the Negros First Cybercentre amid an office’s reorganization.

“I even talked to Galvez, that if he doesn’t want the position and wants to be assigned somewhere else he can just talk to me so I can pass it on to the governor,” he said.

Mapa also challenged Galvez to prove the allegations, adding Galvez has taken the issue personally against him.

“I don’t know what are his intentions, is he really that interested in becoming a provincial engineer maybe? Well he should just prove it,” he stated.
