The hairstyle is an important part of a celebrity’s total look (minsan kapag chaka ang hair, chaka na lahat!). Some fans even sport the same hairstyle as their idol’s (kahit ’di naman nila pwede maging kamukha!).
Celebrity hairstylist Carl Dana has been in the beauty industry for 12 years now. He first trained under Fred Penales and Lucy Britanico of the Hairshaft Salon (15 years nako nag-papa-salon dyan!). He pursued further studies at the L’Oréal Professional School, F&H Academy and Vidal Sassoon in Shanghai and Germany (worldwide naman pala ang ateng!).
“As a kid, I would see models and celebrities on television, and I thought (ang) gaganda ng hair (nila). Sabi ko sa sarili ko, kaya ko ’yan. Someday magiging successful ako sa field na ako ang magpapaganda sa kanila,” Carl shared.
Celebrities Arci Muñoz, Morissette, Yam Concepcion, Ria Atayde, Alexa Ilacad, Katrina Halili, and Jessa Zaragoza are some of his loyal clients (ako rin, five years ko na s’yang stylist!).
“The hairstyles of the stars are products of collaboration between stylist and artist. Usually may gusto sila (ipagawa). Ako naman I give my suggestion kung babagay ba sa shape ng face ang haircut, ang hair color sa skin tone. Kung paano ba magiging trendy yet wearable. Kung paano magiging maganda ang effect sa paglabas nila sa TV at siyempre sa personal,” Carl said (buti nalang maganda ang effect ko TV man o sa real life!).
The Hairshaft Salon resident creative director has been featured on several fashion magazines, beauty blogs and websites because of his innovative treatment in hairstyling (kailan kaya ako magiging innovative?!).
“Practice, practice, practice ang pinaka secret. At pagharap sa client, listen to what they want and be honest din naman sa suggestion mo sa kanila,” he advised (naka-ilang practice nako sa career ko ha!)
He has a different take on every client’s style but there will always be a trend every season. “Maganda ngayon ang midlength a-line bob, long with fringe. Sa kulay, balayage, colormelt na pastels, gray and rose gold” (na-try ko na ang lahat ng kulay, parang kulay LGBT lang ang ganyan!).
Dealing with celebrities can be demanding but this makes his profession challenging and exciting. “You are only good as your last work. You need to unlearn, to learn new things,” he said (matututo pa ba ako? o magpapauto nalang?! Push!).
