MANILA, Philippines – Jeff Horn may be the picture of confidence heading into his fight against Manny Pacquiao on Sunday, but when the bell rings, the young Australian will be in for a rude awakening.
This is the opinion of Mexican icon Juan Manuel Marquez, who told ESPN Deportes on Thursday that Horn does not have the experience that is necessary to give Pacquiao a tough challenge.
“To knock Pacquiao out, you have to know him,” said Marquez, who fought Pacquiao four times and knocked him out cold when they last faced each other in December 2012.
Marquez noted that before he fought Pacquiao for the fourth and last time, he had gotten to know the Filipino fighter’s tendencies inside the boxing ring.
“I had 36 rounds with him,” Marquez pointed out, as quoted by Boxing Scene. “I already knew what he was doing, and that’s why that knockout came at the perfect moment when we wanted it.”
“Beforehand, I already knew him,” he stressed.
Heading into Sunday’s fight at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Horn has repeatedly said that he is looking to land a punch similar to Marquez’s knockout blow – a counter right hand that landed flush on Pacquiao and sent him face-first to the canvas.
“That Marquez knockout has been our main point,” Horn said last Tuesday in Brisbane. “He’s someone that we have looked at a lot, and to land the same punch that Marquez did in the fight – the big overhand right – that’s definitely what we’re looking for.”
Horn says he has watched virtually every single one of Pacquiao’s fights to study the Filipino icon’s tendencies. However, Marquez points out that there is no substitute for experience, and this is something that Horn – who has only fought professionally 17 times – still sorely lacks.
“Jeff Horn does not know him,” Marquez said. “And because of that, it will be difficult.”
“The important thing in this fight is the experience factor, and that’s in favor of Pacquiao,” he added.
While Marquez doubts that Horn can get a knockout win, he is also stressing that it is vital for his old rival to gain an impressive victory over the Australian.
“Pacquiao must look to get the knockout, so he can return to the forefront, to convince the people and promoters and the television networks,” he explained. “He will have to knock Horn out.”
Pacquiao has not won by knockout since 2009, when he stopped Miguel Cotto in the 12th round. He was able to knock down Marquez when they fought in 2012, but the Mexican got off the canvas and went on to register the most important victory of his career.
