The Philippines will take advantage of its being the host of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games by the inclusion of sports and events that is sure to fire up its gold medal drive.
Responding to 2019 chief of mission Monsour del Rosario’s pronouncement that the Philippines will put one over its ASEAN neighbors in its bid to capture overall honors, Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) secretary general Steve Hontiveros said recently that Del Rosario’s strong words was short of being uncalled for.
“Hindi naman dapat ganun baka akalain eh dadayain natin sila,” said Hontiveros.
Almost two weeks ago, Del Rosario said during the awarding of cash incentives to medalists of the Asian Martial Arts and Indoor Games and ASEAN Paralympics that the host will take full advantage.
“Gugulangan natin sila,” said Del Rosario, a remark that didn’t sit well with Hontiveros.
While Hontiveros swears that Del Rosario didn’t actually mean that the Philippines will cheat, the choice of words simply seemed undiplomatic.
Hontiveros insists that as host “we can include sports where we have very strong chances of winning the gold medal so we can achieve our goal of winning the overall crown and not because we will put one over them.”
After the ASEAN Summit, the POC and the Philippine Sports Commission will meet up with Foreign Secretary Allan Peter Cayetano for set the stage for the hosting.
“The members and heads of committees will be discussed while the initial number of sports and venues will be identified,” said Hontiveros.
