The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) warned motorists that flashing hazard lights is not an excuse for parking in prohibited areas and streets.

MMDA General Manager Tim Orbos said a good number of motorists think that they can get away with being apprehended for illegal parking when their hazard lights are switched on.

“Unless there is a real emergency, turning your hazard signal is not an excuse to stop and park, even temporarily,” said Orbos.

At present, clearing streets of illegally parked vehicles remain a big struggle for the MMDA.

After numerous clearing operations in a particular area, the same illegally parked vehicles clog the streets once the clearing crew leaves, to the consternation of MMDA chairman Danilo Lim.

“Like for example, NIA Road, we have been clearing the area for 10 times already, but we find ourselves clearing illegally parked vehicles again and again,” said Lim.

Lim reiterated barangay officials have the responsibility of maintaining areas previously cleared by the agency.

“We cannot do other important tasks anymore; resources go to waste if we will keep on returning to areas that supposedly under the care of barangay captains,” said Lim.

The MMDA have filed complaints against eight barangay chairmen who tolerate illegal parking and illegal vending on roads cleared by the agency.
