MANILA – While some transport groups continue to protest the plan to modernize public utility vehicles (PUVs), Grab Philippines said it is fully backing the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) initiative.

In a statement, Grab Philippines said the program will align with the entry of more modern, technology-based solutions such as transport network vehicle services or TNVS.

“Grab Philippines strongly supports the Transportation Department in its efforts for PUV modernization,” Grab Philippines’ country head Brian Cu said in a statement.

Cu said that if the PUV modernization program is executed effectively, it will make public transport safer and more convenient for commuters, and more cost-effective for operators and drivers.

“It’s the first step towards a real multi-modal transport system through the synergy of national government and LGUs,” he added.

Cu said Grab is ready to support the modernization program through finance and training.

Grab is still awaiting for the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to renew its accreditation.

Meanwhile, the DOTr and the Department of Interior and Local Government unveiled on Monday the omnibus franchising guidelines or OFG, which will let local officials define the routes for new and more modern PUVs.

The government said it is ready to provide financial assistance to operators and drivers who want to purchase new transport units to replace their old jeepneys.

At least 20 government agencies and their private partners led by the DOTr will assist drivers and operators in the modernization of their PUVs.

The government said the transition from the current PUVs to the units under the modernization program will take three years. — with reports from Apples Jalandoni and Doris Bigornia, ABS-CBN News
