Matthew Wright led Gilas PIlipinas with 21 points off the bench but the national team didn’t exactly looked impressive against Taipei B.

Barely 24 hours after whipping Chinese Taipei A, Gilas Pilipinas had a harder time dealing with the supposedly inferior Chinese Taipei B.

Nevertheless, the Philippine national team scored a big 93-82 victory over the hosts Monday at the Taipei Peace International Basketball Hall, improving its record in the 39th William Jones Cup to 2-1.

With its offense in disarray, Gilas only managed a 44-all tie with Taipei B at the break. However, the nationals came out firing in the second half, opening the third period with a quick 7-0 blast to create some separation.

Taipei B remained persistent though, keeping the game close before Gilas mounted another late run to take a 69-62 lead heading into the fourth.

The Philippines was only up, 77-75, in the middle of the payoff period before Jio Jalalon sparked an 8-1 rally as Gilas finally pulled away for good. A booming three by RR Pogoy served as the dagger as Gilas took an 88-77 spread with a little over two minutes left.

Matthew Wright came off the bench to once again lead the Philippines in scoring, pumping 21 points on five three-point shots.

Pogoy finished with 15 while import Mike Myers finally played like one, going for 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Kiefer Ravena submitted another all-around effort of 10 points, seven assists and two steals while Jalalon was another key cog off the bench, firing 13 points, 11 in the second half, on top of five rebounds and five dimes.

Gilas Pilipinas will go for a third straight win Tuesday against Japan.
