10 a.m. – Flying V vs Gamboa
12 noon – Cignal vs Zark’s
New teams Flying V and Gamboa Coffee Mix seek a sequel to their dramatic victories two weeks ago when they face off today in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena on Pasig City.
The Thunder and Coffee Lovers began their inaugural campaign in the PBA’s developmental tournament on a thrilling note, which they hope to capitalize as they see action in an early tipoff set at 10 a.m.
Former La Salle star Jeron Teng scored a game-winning jumper that propelled Flying V to a stunning 86-84 win over Aspirants’ Cup champion Cignal while playing coach Leo Avenido sparked Gamboa to an 85-84 comeback victory over Zark’s Burger in their games held last May 25.
Despite the win, Flying V coach Eric Altamirano believes that more work needs to be done.
“We’re still a work-in-progress. We have to keep what we’ve been doing right and we can’t overlook anybody this season,” he said.
Avenido, the league’s oldest player at 38 and the least experienced coach in the 11-team field, believes his team can give fancied rivals a run for their money.
“Although mga bata at mga prospects sa PBA ang lalabanan namin, lalaban naman kami. Kahit medyo late kami nag-umpisa, nakikita ko naman na nandoon na yung sistema. Game shape na lang ng individual players namin ang kailangan,” he said.
Meanwhile, Cignal shoots for its second victory in three matches against Zark’s in the other game set at 12 noon.
The Hawkeyes rebounded from their loss to Flying V by beating Tanduay, 89-63, last Thursday.
Cignal coach Boyet Fernandez, who will rely on former Far Eastern University star Raymar Jose, Oping Sumalinog, Davon Potts and Jason Perkins, is confident that his squad can topple the Jawbreakers in the team’s third game in four game days.
