MANILA, Philippines – San Sebastian College continued its splendid campaign in the 2017 FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup as the Golden Stags gored University of the Philippines (UP), 64-51, to take the solo lead in Group B on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Golden Stags improved to 6-1 in the summer tilt, overtaking Far Eastern University (5-1) and Adamson University (6-2) in the standings leading up to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
RK Ilagan led San Sebastian with 14 points, but it was Jason David who shone brightest with a superb 13-point, 4-rebound, 6-assist performance while also serving as the primary defender on UP star Paul Desiderio.
“They are playing as a team,” San Sebastian coach Egay Macaraya said after the game. “Everybody is stepping up. As you can see Jason is here (as the best player of the game). Every time we won, iba ang pumupunta dito.”
“So I guess everybody is stepping up, and we played good defense in the second half,” he added.
The game was tied at 34 at the break, with UP’s Diego Dario scoring 11 points to make up for Desiderio’s scoreless outing in the first half. But Ilagan matched him with 14 points built on four three-pointers.
The Golden Stags seized control in the third period, as they opened the frame with a 14-0 run anchored by veteran point guard Ryan Costelo and David. The two conspired in back-to-back fastbreak buckets, and David put the finishing touches on the crucial run with a transition bucket off a UP turnover.
By the time the dust settled, the Golden Stags were comfortably ahead, 48-34. The Fighting Maroons threatened early in the fourth frame, coming to within 49-56 off two straight lay-ups by Ibrahim Quattara and a pair of charities by Desiderio.
But David, showing that he was not only a defensive stopper, knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to push San Sebastian on top, 64-49, and they cruised to victory from that point on.
“Right now, ‘yung character ng mga bata, ‘yung character ng team is hindi sila nag-gi-give up. So that’s a good thing for us,” said Macaraya, whose team won its sixth straight game in the FilOil tourney.
Michael Calisaan had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Golden Stags, who had a 45-32 rebounding advantage over UP.
Quattara finished with 14 points and 12 boards for the Fighting Maroons. But Desiderio struggled, missing all eight of his field goals and finishing with two points in the game.
UP dropped to 4-2 in the tournament. The Fighting Maroons played without head coach Bo Perasol. Assistant coach Ricky Dandan called the shots for the team against San Sebastian.
