MANILA — Without a clear-cut star, University of Perpetual Help is well aware it needs to bank on team effort.
They did just that on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Arena as steady offense and solid defense propelled the Altas just barely past University of the East (UE), 72-68.
“It was really hard, but we just have to take what they gave to us,” head coach Nosa Omorogbe said after his boys improved to 2-2 in the 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.
Indeed, the two teams were going toe-to-toe and the Las Pinas-based squad was only able to get a slim margin, 71-65, inside the last two minutes courtesy of a triple from Jack Hao.
Nick Abanto wasn’t letting the Red Warriors go away that easily, however, and scored four unanswered points to get them within two.
UE then had all the chances to tie the tally or even take the lead, but Alvin Pasaol and Mark Olayon muffed on all five of their triple tries.
Of course, the Perpetual defense had everything to do with it. “We just had to play really smart in the end,” Omorogbe said.
Sean Mangalino’s split from the stripe in the dying moments put the finishing touches on the gritty win. “I just told them to keep on playing. I just told them to take what’s being given to us,” Omorogbe said.
Hao and Gab Dagangon scored 14 points, respectively, to top the scoring column for the Altas.
Pasaol paced the Warriors with 19 points, but only shot 8-of-25 from the field to see his team fall to 2-3.
