The planned Singapore trip of former Senator Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada has been opposed by the prosecution in a hearing held yesterday before the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division, and the court gave the prosecution five days to file their written opposition.
Estrada is hoping to accompany his father, former President and Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada, to seek medical treatment in Singapore from November 11 to 20.
In his travel motion, Estrada said his father was able to secure an appointment with Dr. Premkumar Pillay, a practicing neurosurgeon at the Singapore Brain-Spine Nerves Center at Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
The appointment for Erap’s examinations and possible surgery will be from November 12 to 19. The earlier date Estrada requested is for any advance preparations, while his later return date is for any extended recuperation period of the mayor.
“I would greatly need the support of my family on this and Jinggoy has always been constant companion and one of the few persons whom I trust to look after my health and welfare,” Erap wrote in his letter to the Sandiganbayan.
Estrada was sent to jail over three years ago after he was charged with plunder in relation to the reportedly illegal use of his P183-million PDAF (Priority Development Assistance Fund), which went to the fictitious nongovernment organizations (NGOs) owned by Janet Lim Napoles.
He was recently released from his detention facility in Camp Crame, Quezon after the Fifth Division allowed him to post bail amounting to P1,330,000 – P1 million for plunder, and P330,000 for his 11 graft charges.
