BAGUIO CITY – Rescue operatives in the municipality of Sagada are exerting effort to rescue one of the seven tour guides who went for an exploration of the Victoria Cave in relation to the plan to include it  as a tourist destination.

Municipal Tourism Officer Robert Pangod said Monday morning people from his office are doing a search and rescue operation to locate Roderick Malecdan inside Victoria Cave.

Malecdan was trapped inside the cave on Sunday afternoon after rain water caused the river to overflow. He and six others went for an exploration mission to check out the cave as part of the town’s initiative to look into the possibility of  including the same as a spelunking site for tourists.

Pangod said joint rescue operatives are still pursuing the effort to locate the missing tour guide inside the cave

He said that based on the report of Sagada Municipal Police Station, seven tour guides entered Victoria Cave located in Sitio Maduto, Barangay Angkeling, Sagada to do exploration activities. While inside, the water level increased. Four were able to immediately go out.

They reported the incident to the police who launched a rescue operation. They were able to rescue two more around 6:45 in the evening of Sunday but Malecdan remaind missing as of noon time of Monday.

Pang-od said Sagada has been experiencing rains in the past days, which could have caused the gush of water to go inside Victoria cave.
