Asia’s biggest mixed martial arts promotion, ONE Championship, heads back to Singapore for Dynasty of Heroes, featuring a couple of highly-anticipated title matches.
In the main event, Singapore’s own “Unstoppable” Angela Lee puts her ONE Atomweight World Championship, and her unbeaten streak on the line when she takes on Brazil’s Istela Nunes.
Unbeaten in seven matches, Lee has established herself as one of ONE Championship’s biggest stars. The 20-year old has impressively dispatched every challenge put in front of her, including a third-round stoppage over Jenny Huang in her first title defense last March.
Looking to tear down Lee’s hype will be Sao Paulo’s Nunes, who also boasts an unblemished 6-0 record. The 24-year old made quite the first impression in her ONE Championship debut last August, decisioning former title contender Mei Yamaguchi in Macau.
In the co-main event, the “Funky” one makes his return to the ONE cage, as 15-0 welterweight king Ben Askren will also put his title and his perfect record on the line against Malaysia’s Agilan “The Alligator” Thani.
After making a name for himself in the North American promotion Bellator, where he also reigned as welterweight champion, Wisconsin’s Askren took his talents to Asia and wasted no time in reclaiming world championship gold, becomign the ONE welterweight title holder in just his second match with the company in 2014. Since then, Askren has successfully defended his title once, and looks to do so again against one of Malaysia’s best.
Carrying an impressive 6-0 record, Thani has shown that he’s one of the welterweight division’s most talented prospects, not to mention that all six of his wins have come via stoppage, none of them reaching the third round. In his last outing, Thani only needed two rounds to submit the erstwhile-undefeated Jeff Huang to earn a crack at the welterweight strap.
Before the title contenders take to the cage, one of our own will look for retribution, as Team Lakay’s Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio meets Thailand’s Anatpong “Mak” Bunrad in a flyweight rematch.
It was 2015 when Eustaquio and Bunrad first crossed paths, with the Thai getting the better of the Pinoy warrior via split decision. Since then, Eustaquio has gone 2-1, with wins over flyweight contenders such as Saiful Merican and Gianni Subba, before getting submitted by a much bigger Toni Tauru at bantamweight. Now back at 125-pounds, Eustaquio is confident that he’ll come out victorious this time around.
Bunrad on the other hand, hasn’t seen much action since defeating Eustaquio back in 2015. Since then, he’s only had one fight, a loss to Subba in late-2015. The Thai will be looking to bounce back, and at the same time repeat history over Eustaquio.
