The Philippine President has to be harsh in implementing martial law because he has the monopoly of legitimate, legal violence through the police and the military, former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said.

The current firefight in Marawi city is more than a rebellion because we are dealing with an ideological and, worst, a religious problem which is Wahhabism, a kind of fanatical Islamism followed by Saudi Arabia that is being taught in Madrassas in Mindanao.

The Filipino people must trust their President, President Duterte, in placing Mindanao under martial law.

The martial law decision is based on strategic intelligence information in the President’s possession and that he was elected by the people to represent the general will.

Enrile, former defense minister during the martial law administration of the late President Marcos, stressed these in siding with President Duterte in placing Mindanao under martial law because this is in the exercise of the Chief Executive’s constitutional mandate to fight enemies of the State and control the peace.

Since there are pockets of resistance to Duterte’s martial law declaration, Enrile said it is only Congress that can stop the President from implementing the declaration ‘’if they have the votes.’’

The President’s military and security men are scheduled to appear before Congress to explain the basis of the President in placing the entire Mindanao island under martial law.
