DAVAO CITY – President Rodrigo Duterte said the government will rebuild Marawi City with the intention of making it into a “center for moderation and tolerance.”
Duterte arrived at the Davao International Airport Tuesday night after a two-day visit to Tokyo, Japan.
The President said that the Department of National Defense (DND) will take the lead in rebuilding the war-ravaged city, with the national government aiming to reconstruct it into a place that will tolerate all faiths and beliefs.
WIth the poor being prioritized, the national government is aiming to fast-track the rebuilding of homes, with Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana taking charge of coordinating all reconstruction efforts in the city.
Lorenzana heads the Task Force Bangon Marawi, which has been funded with billions of pesos in funds.
The Moros, Duterte said, will also take the lead in cleaning up Marawi City.
“The rich are now somewhere else busy building. Ang concern ko yung mahihirap (My concern is the poor),” Duterte said.
“Ang setup, (DND) will be the overall entity,” he said.
Undersecretaries of various government agencies will be tasked with coordinating with the DND to address the concerns corresponding to their departments.
According to the President, he preferred this approach instead of creating core committees that will address the concerns above the rubbles of Marawi City.
“There have been many proposals in the Cabinet which I rejected kasi ayaw ko yung mga committee-committee, maubos lang ang pera (I didn’t like the idea of creating committees because the money will just run out),” Duterte said.
