Strange but true! A “religious” group, the Islamic State (IS) engages terrorist attacks during the holy month of Ramadan.The Maute group which belongs to the IS is doing this in Marawi, Lanao del Sur.

* * *

The IS terrorist group also claimed responsibility for the attack on the posh casino-hotel Resorts World in Pasay City last May 31. However, police authorities claimed it’s an “isolated case.” The lone gunman was a “high roller” in the casino who probably lost a lot of money and ran amok, they say.

Nonetheless, IS spokesman Abu Mohammed al-Adnani sometime ago called for Muslims to engage in jihad (holy war) and become martyrs during Ramadan.

“The best acts that bring you closer to God are jihad, so hurry it and make sure to carry out the invasion this holy month and be exposed to martyrdom in it,” Adnani said.

This belief is weird and very disturbing because it’s just the opposite of what Allah-fearing Muslims practice during the holy month of Ramadan. Two of these are fasting from taking food and water from sunrise to sunset and doing acts of charity.

Well-meaning Orthodox Muslims slam the religious teachings of their extremist brothers. The secretary-general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Iyad Madani, has called on Muslims, including those in the Philippines, to reject extremists who portray their struggle as jihad.

* * *

Madani said the misuse of the name of Allah by extremists was misleading and unacceptable and that he disagreed with their point of view, which included the killing of innocent women and children.

“The term (jihad) has been misused by extremists to convince young people to join them,” Madani said.

Madani said being “a good person” is the real jihad. “This (use of the term jihad by extremists) is misleading and we have to face a world which sees Islam in a negative way,” he was further quoted as saying.

The OIC, which is made up of 57 countries, had been rallying against Islamic extremism. But apparently to no avail

Madani also batted for the promotion of Islamic values to combat extremism.“Islamic values such as justice, kindness, fairness, freedom of faith and coexistence through education were highly important to combat extremism and intolerance,” he said.

The distorted teachings of extremists on “jihad” and being a “missionary” to kill innocent civilians make the world indeed a dangerous place to live in.

The lighter side. Two Christians, George and Michael, were lost in the Sahara desert.

They were dying of hunger and thirst when they suddenly came upon an oasis and a mosque beside it.

* * *

Michael said to George, “Look,  let’s pretend we are Muslim, otherwise these Arabs will kill us. I am going to call myself Mohammed.” George refused to change his name, he said: “My name is George, and I will not pretend to be other than but what I am.”

* * *

The Imam (priest) of the mosque received both well and asked about their names. Michael said, “My name is Mohammed.” George said: “My name is George.” The Imam turned to the helpers of the mosque and said: “Bring some food and water for George only.”

* * *

Then he turned to the other and said, “Well Mohammed, I hope you are aware that we are in the holy Ramadan, our season of fasting from food and drink for one month. Michael almost fainted!

Moral: Do not lie.
