Dismissal order saddens mayor’s political foes

Councilors Joshua Alim and Plaridel Nava

OPPOSITION Councilors Joshua Alim and Plaridel Nava said they are saddened by the Ombudsman decision dismissing Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog from office and perpetually barring him from government service.

Nava and Alim, both vocal critics of the mayor, said they lament their erstwhile ally’s predicament.

“I am sorry for Jed and for his family. I saw this coming the moment he was branded by President Duterte as drug protector,” Nava said.

Nava looked at Mabilog’s fate as part of politics and life.

“This is politics, this is life. There will be ups and downs and there will be challenges along the way,” Nava said.

Alim recalled how Mabilog played an important part in his political career before they parted ways in 2016. He also cited Mabilog for working hard for the progress of the city.

“I am sad. If not for Mayor Jed, I would not have returned to politics in 2010. It was him who persuaded me to join his team,” Alim said.

“I am sad because I’ve been with the good mayor. I’ve been with three mayors in the city, and Mayor Jed for me, with all due respect to the two others, he is so far the mayor who delivered for the progress of the city,” Alim said.

Alim said he is puzzled by the timing of the Ombudsman decision to Mabilog’s case.

“I am surprised. Even before Mayor Jed was a councilor, there were cases filed against city officials with the Ombudsman. Ngaa nauna (desisyon) kay Mayor Jed haw? I am just wondering. Sa kadamu-damu sang kaso nga ginpan-file against city officials…take the case of Pavia Housing Scam. Ngaa nauna iya? Ano na ginpili?” Alim asked.

With the odds against Mabilog’s favor, Nava can only pray for his former ally.

“I wish mayor Mabilog well and I will include him in my prayers,” said Nava.

With the seasons of politics constantly changing, Alim called on his colleagues to “always respect the government offices.”

“The city government will stay. The occupants of the Sangguniang Panlungsod and the Executive Department may come and go, what is important is those who sit in these positions respect their offices,” Alim said.

Alim and Nava broke ranks with Mabilog between 2015 and 2016 because of various controversial issues which hounded the City Hall.
