MANILA, Philippines — Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters was hailed the new Miss Universe on Monday (Manila time), besting 91 contestants from all over the world. 

Former Miss Universe Iris Mittenaere passed on the crown to the 22-year-old beauty queen during the 66th edition of the pageant at the AXIS theater at Planet Hollywood casino-resort on the Las Vegas Strip.

Nel-Peters, who recently earned a business management degree, showed that she is a combination of beauty, grace and brains.

The first runner-up was Miss Colombia Laura Gonzalez, while the second runner-up was Miss Jamaica Davina Bennett.

The beauty from South Africa has earned a yearlong salary, a luxury apartment in New York City for the duration of her reign and more prizes.

Meanwhile, The country’s very own Rachel Peters failed to bring the country’s fourth Miss Universe crown after falling short to advance to the competition’s final five.

The 26-year-old beauty from Camarines Sur earlier entered the top 16 of the pageant as wildcard finalist, even after failing to enter the top four of the Africa and Asia Pacific group.The country’s very own Rachel Peters failed to bring the country’s fourth Miss Universe crown after falling short to advance to the competition’s final five.
