National police chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa advised Iloilo City Mayor Jed Mabilog to cooperate in the anti-drugs war amid speculations that he would suffer the same fate of the two slain mayors being linked to illegal drugs trade.
The advice is in reaction to the appointment of Chief Insp. Jovie Espenido as new director of the Iloilo City police, Espenido’s last two assignments as police chief became controversial because of the death of the incumbent mayors.
“My message to him is that he should cooperate with the PNP. Whatever his shortcomings before, which he himself admitted before that he did not focus much on illegal drugs, he should do more,” said dela Rosa.
“He should show that he loves Iloilo City and that he would fight illegal drugs with all his might with the help of Espenido,” he added.
Mabilog is in the list of President Duterte’s alleged narco-politicians. He is being linked to alleged top drug lord of Western Visayas, Melvin Odicta, who was killed with his wife last year.
Dela Rosa said eliminating illegal drugs trade could be the biggest accomplishments of Mabilog and Espenido in Iloilo City which was tagged by Duterte as a shabulized area of the country.
No less than Duterte had ordered the appointment of Espenido as Iloilo City police chief, even joking about Mabilog’s lifespan now that Espenido would be coming as the police chief.
“They should help each other because ending illegal drugs trade could be their biggest accomplishments,” dela Rosa.said.
But if he would not cooperate, dela Rosa warned that the PNP would not hesitate to go head-on with him.
“If Espenido validates that he is into drugs, as I’ve said we will not back out in this fight even if you are mayor, governor or congressman,” dela Rosa.said.
