STARTING STATEMENT. What was billed as a probable NCAA playoff preview turned out to be a mismatch in favor of San Beda.
Lyceum of the Philippines University has impressed in the earlygoing in the 2017 Filoil Flying Preseason Tournament.
In just their debut in the tournament, however, San Beda College proved that they remain the gold standard.
Robert Bolick picked up where he left off in the PBA D-League as he and the Red Lions overwhelmed CJ Perez and the Pirates, 96-79, on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
“Credit to the boys. They were very excited because this is our first game,” head coach Boyet Fernandez said after his boys registered a convincing victory to begin their campaign in the tournament.
LPU, which has made waves thus far in the preseason, was keeping up with San Beda after the first half.
Come the third, however, the Red Lions just turned it on with Bolick fronting the 19-9 charge that increased a five-point margin into a 74-59 advantage with three minutes remaining in the quarter.
Fernandez’ boys just pushed harder on the pedal in the final frame where their lead ballooned to as high as 20.
PBA D-League MVP Bolick wound up with 16 points, nine assists, and four rebounds while Javee Mocon contributed a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double.
On defense, San Beda’s discipline limited the impact of both Mike Nzeusseu and CJ Perez. “Credit to Topex (Robinson), it’s a different team. I told the boys that if we want to beat LPU, we had to match their intensity,” Fernandez said.
For the Pirates, it was Perez who showed the way with 15 points and seven rebounds. Unable to keep up with their opponents’ balance, however, they dropped to 4-2.
