Baguio City — A festival that celebrates the rich heritage of Cordillera Region was launched by the University of the Cordilleras (UC) in time for National Heritage Month.
“Cor De Mayo” or Cordilleran May Festival with a theme, “Malasakit Para Sa Pamana” (Care for Heritage) is the newest cultural event in the city.
According to Engineer Aloysius Mapalo, UC Dean for Student Affairs and Services, Cor De Mayo is eyed to be celebrated annually featuring the region’s best.
The festival kicked off Wednesday with a photo exhibit by international photographer Eros Goze featuring the “UC Saeng ya Kasay Cultural Ensemble” who also played as live mannequins donning the indigenous attires of the six provinces of the Cordillera.
Goze, a known fashion designer, exhibited the costume, culture and tradition of the provinces of Abra, Benguet, Apayao, Kalinga, Ifugao and Mt. Province through his fashion photography during the launch.
“Our founder envisioned UC to be in the forefront of cultural preservation and we need to educate our students to learn to appreciate and respect it,” Mapalo said.
During the event, a symposium-forum in partnership with the Cordillera News Agency (CNA) also took place. Cultural sensitivity, understanding and respecting the value of cultures citing the misrepresentation of cultures on social media, were discussed during the forum.
