MANILA, Philippines — Over 1,500 coaches from all over the Philippines will get the chance to learn from some of the brightest minds in the game during a three-day coaches convention at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The 6th MVPSF Coaches Convention will be held from November 6-8 at the Pasig City venue, with local basketball coaches learning the latest techniques and developments in the game.

The convention will also serve as the official kick-off of the annual SM NBTC League, a five-month tournament that culminates in March 2018.

Among the speakers are Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Sonny Barrios, national team head coach Chot Reyes, and Tab Baldwin, the coach of the unbeaten Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles.

Also present in the three-day event that kicked off Monday are National University assistant coach Paolo Layug, Alab Pilipinas coach Jimmy Alapag, Chally Callanta, Noli Ayo, and guest Australian coach Brett Coxsedge.

Journalist Quinito Henson will give a talk about communicating and motivating as well.

The SM NBTC Coaches Convention has steadily grown since its inception six years ago.

According to SM NBTC director Eric Altamirano, some 1,500 coaches from 80 cities nationwide will be in attendance.

“Not many coaches get to fly abroad to learn first-hand from the top minds in the world,” said Altamirano.

“Because of technology, coaches can now watch videos online. But first-hand experience where you are engaged with the teacher is invaluable experience,” he added.

Altamirano said that they have noticed a growth in how coaches from the province teach the game.

“Before, coaches from the province teach in a ‘bara bara’ style, but it is different now,” said Altamirano, the coach who led NU to the UAAP title in Season 77. “The approach is different not only in Xs and Os, but also how they mentor the players.”

“Outside the usual big cities like Manila, Cebu and Davao, we’ve seen the improvement of Olongapo and Cagayan de Oro to name a few,” he added.

“In the long run, this can only be good for the game and for a great many people.”

The presence of Coxsedge makes this year’s convention more special. A renowned coach with over 20 years of professional basketball experience, Coxsedge will be talking and teaching about coaching multi-skilled players, creating a competitive training environment, and developing a defensive style of play.

“We are excited to have someone if the caliber of Coach Brett teaching in the SM NBTC,” said Altamirano. “The outside perspective is crucial also to the development of the game.”

“For SM NBTC, our main thrust us to develop skills, build characters, and raise leaders not only among the players, but also the coaches,” he added. “The coaches play a vital role in the development of the young players, especially in the grassroots level.”

“So, it is important that we also equip them with the tools, mindset, and learnings on how to be a more well-rounded coach.”
