Cinemalaya Is Shaping Up To Be The Best Local Film Festival This Year

The best time of the year for local movie fans is finally here! Cinemalaya is back, and they’ve got an even bigger lineup that showcases the best and most exciting films that Philippine independent cinema has to offer. For new films, there will beÂnine full-length and 12 short film entries.

Cinemalaya will also be screening their usual mainstays, including: Panoptika or the documentary section; Festivals Best or the best films from local film festivals; Indie Nation dedicated to independent films; Asian Showcase for award-winning movies from across Asia; Animahenasyon for animated films; and Outdoor Screenings.

They will also be doing retrospective screenings for legendary actress Lolita Rodriguez, showcasing films like 1992’s Lucia by Mel Chionglo; 1974’s Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang and 1979’s Ina, Kapatid, Anak both by Lino Brocka. It will also pay tribute to the late director Gil Portes with special screenings of 1996’s Mulanay; 2010’s Two Funerals; and 2002’s Mga Munting Tinig.

Cinemalaya runs from August 4 to 13, with screenings at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Greenbelt 3, Glorietta 4, Trinoma, and UP Town Center. Ticket prices are P150 (regular screening) and P100 (students).

Ang Guro Kong Di Marunong Magbasa

Directed by: Perry Escano

Despite being illiterate, a young farmer becomes the teacher at a small barrio in Mindanao. When he disappears, his students forego their education and decide to join a rebel organization.
