MANILA, Philippines – The quarterfinal pairings have been set, but teams are still expected to go all out in the final day of the preliminary round of the 2017 Philippine Superliga (PSL) All-Filipino Conference on Tuesday at the Baliwag Star Arena in Bulacan.
Riding the crest of their victory over Petron last week, the Cignal HD Spikers (4-1) clash with the Generika-Ayala Lifesavers (2-3) at 7 p.m., hoping to wrap up their campaign in the prelims on a high note.
Meanwhile, Cocolife (1-4) tests Cherrylume (0-5) in the curtain-raiser at 5 p.m.
Regardless of the results of Tuesday’s games, Foton (5-1) will still assume the top seed in the crossover quarterfinals, thanks to its superior quotient over Cignal. The Tornadoes will battle winless Cherrylume in the do-or-die quarters, due to the Iron Lady Warriors’ inferior quotient to the Asset Managers.
Other quarterfinal pairings will feature Cignal against Cocolife; Petron against Sta. Lucia; and Generika-Ayala against F2 Logistics.
Quarterfinal action kicks off this Thursday when the league rolls back to FilOil Flying V Center in San Juan.
Before that, however, Cignal will try to build on their spectacular win over the Blaze Spikers, with the trio of Rachel Anne Daquis, Honey Royse Tubino, and national team stalwart Jovelyn Gonzaga leading the way.
“We can’t afford to be complacent,” warned Cignal coach George Pascua. “Things are going to be tough from here. We have to work hard because everybody is also preparing as well.”
Cignal faces a squad that is capable of pulling off a shocking upset in Generika.
In their previous match, the Lifesavers pushed Foton to the limit, and while the Tornadoes survived in five sets, Generika-Ayala still proved that it can stand toe to toe with PSL powerhouses.
“We’re playing each game as if it’s our last,” said Generika-Ayala coach Francis Vicente. “Our morale is high after giving Foton a scare.”
“The players realized that they are also capable of winning over the heavyweights of the league,” he said.
Spikers Fiola Ceballos and Patty Jane Orendain will again provide the firepower while skipper Gen Casugod, Mikaela Lopez and Angeli Araneta as well as liberos Bia General and Kath Arado take care of the defense.
“We want to finish the preliminaries on a high note, then let’s see what will happen in the quarterfinals. All we’ll do is to work hard, play hard and hope for the best,” said Vicente.
