GEORGETTE Sanchez-Vargas, a dynamic and multitalented dancer, has received many blessings in life and now, with her choreographic gift, serves as a blessing to others.
She was very active in sports and arts in her younger years.
She started dancing at the age of 3 under the tutelage of her mother, Janette Garcia-Sanchez.
She took up piano lessons, joined group singing and dancing competitions in school, and attended painting classes.
She played badminton and volleyball, and did gymnastics when she was in grade school.
In high school, she played softball and joined the school’s swimming team.
When she was a fourth year student of St. Scolastica’s Academy, she became a member of the Western Visayas swimming team and the team were champions during the Palarong Pambansa in 1991 held in Iloilo City.
“As a child, I would always say ‘I want to become a ballerina.’ I never took it seriously though since I also enjoyed other things. But dancing is like walking for me,” she says.
When she graduated from high school at the age of 16, she decided to pursue dancing in Manila. She went to Ballet Philippines and was given a scholarship. After four years of dancing with the company, as a scholar and later on an apprentice, she was promoted as a member.
In 2000, she represented the Philippines at the 9th Paris International Dance Competition in Contemporary Dance. She won the silver medal.
In 2001, she graduated from the De La Salle – College of St. Benilde with the degree of Bachelor of Performing Arts major in Dance.
She became the first contemporary dance teacher of Footworks, the dance company of the school.
Later on, she accepted an offer to work with the ABC Dance Company in Austria where she danced under the direction of Nicolas Musin for three years.
She also worked with the Tanztheater Darmstadt and Stadttheater Klagenfurt, among others, in Germany.
“I learned to be independent, think for myself, got hurt and rejected lots of times but pulled myself up and continued to enjoy life. Even at 42, there are still ups and downs, and I treat whatever comes as a challenge, knowing that we have a God who loves us and knows what is best for us,” she says.
Presently, she is married for almost three years and teaching in her mother’s school, the Garcia-Sanchez School of Dance located in Bacolod for 46 years.
She is also busy doing triathlon as a hobby.
“Our school has always been generous to share our gift to the less fortunate ones. I am proud to see those who we gave scholarships to, having a good life now, because of dancing,” she says.
At her age now, Vargas has realized that “each day is special and that life is short, so we should always make the most of what we can, every single day. We should never forget to thank our Lord for all the blessings He has given us.”
