Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu – The Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LCPO) has recommended the termination of the search and retrieval operation for the body of Bien Unido, Bohol Mayor Gisela Boniel in the waters off Caubian Island in this city.
The LCPO recommended to the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 to end the operation Friday after 14 days of search for the body of the lady mayor yielded negative results.
LCPO director Senior Supt. Rommel Cabagnot submitted the recommendation to PRO 7 Director Noli Taliño.
Senior Insp. Jacinto Mandal, a technical diver who led the diving team searching for the body of Boniel, said the team had already covered the area were the body was reportedly dumped.
Mandal said that while he believes that the body is still in the waters between the islands of Caubian and Olango, the divers could no longer go down deeper than 200 feet.
“The operation can only be continued if we utilize advanced diving technology,” he said.
The body of Boniel was reportedly dumped into the sea after she was shot in the head.
The prime suspect is the mayor’s husband, Bohol provincial board member Niño Rey Boniel.
On Friday night, the suspect was escorted from Cebu to Bohol, where he will be detained based on a court order, a move that was strongly opposed by the PRO 7.
Taliño said that the police have grounds for the detention of Niño in Police Station 2, near the regional headquarters in Cebu City.
“He is still facing the parricide case in Lapu-Lapu for the kidnap-slay of his wife and the investigators in charge are here in the regional office so he has to be detained here,” Taliño maintained.
Taliño said that Niño must be secured in the headquarters considering that the case he is facing was filed by the Regional Intelligence Division.
