(UPDATED) Jerwin Ancajas’ next world-title defense remains on course even as Manny Pacquiao’s supposed rematch with Jeff Horn set for later this year has been scuttled.
Joven Jimenez, Ancajas’ manager-coach, said his ward was supposed to fight in the undercard of Pacquiao-Horn Part 2.
But since the bout isn’t going to happen as earlier planned, Jimenez and his group will have to wait for another fight date from MP Promotions, the Pacquiao-owned company that handles Ancajas’ promotional rights.
“Ngayon nag-aantay muna kami kung ano ang plano nina sir Manny,” Jimenez told ABS-CBN News.
Jimenez, however, said they were assured that Ancajas will make his third title defense late this year.
“Iyan ang plano, late November o December. Baka itong week o next week ma-confirm ang fight date,” he said.
The sweet-punching fighter from Panabo city finished Teiru Kinoshita of Japan in 7 rounds to retain the world junior bantamweight crown in the undercard of Pacquiao versus Horn in Brisbane in July.
Ancajas is set to make his mandatory defense against the winner of the all-Filipino bout between Johnriel Casimero and Jonas Sultan on Saturday, but he is expected to fight one more time this year to keep himself active.
“Sa April (2018) pa naman iyong mandatory kaya pwede pa namang lumaban si Jerwin,” Jimenez said.
“Sa ngayon regular training muna kami para active . . . Mababa muna ang volume ng training niya.”
The coach said that part of Ancajas’ wish list are title-unification matches against two other junior-bantamweight kings — Naoya Inoue of Japan and Srisaket Sor Rungvisai of Thailand.
Inoue dominated Antonio Nieves in 6 rounds to retain the WBO crown, while Sor Rungvisai defended the WBC title by knocking out former pound-for-pound king Roman Gonzalez in the 4th round.
Both fights took place over the weekend.
“Noong una ang pangarap namin si Roman Gonzalez, pero dahil wala na siya si Srisaket Sor Rungvisai at Inoue na,” Jimenez said.
