Ranidel de Ocampo wasted no time getting to work. Now donning a Meralco Bolts jersey, the veteran forward scored 10 points in just 16 minutes in his new team’s 28-point blowout victory over the Alaska Aces.
“It has been an interesting week, picking up Ranidel in the middle of the week and teaching him the entire system in three days. I thought he did a very good job today blending in the team,” said Bolts’ head coach Norman Black.
With the addition of RDO in the team, Meralco boosted its chances for at the 2017 PBA Governor’s Cup title. They get another big body and a vocal veteran presence in the locker room.
“We expect Ranidel to be a big addition to our team. He will bring a lot of talent and experience that I will think will help us down the stretch,” said Black.“We are so happy to have him on the team right now. The players came out and played really, really well with his addition. They took it positively.”
For de Ocampo, it was just business as usual. The first game with the Bolts is just a sign of things to come.
“Masaya kasi unang-una panalo kami. Nakita ko kung paano actual game na magkakasama kami. At the same time, nakilala ko mga tao sa loob ng team,” said de Ocampo.
Despite playing on limited time, RDO relishes how the Bolts coaching staff are breaking him slowly into the team’s system. He looks forward to getting more minutes as the playoffs near.
“Wala naman masyadong pinagawa sa akin si coach. Sinimplehan niya lang tsaka hindi niya ako ginamit ng sobrang tagal. Ok yun sa beginner na tulad ko sa team.”
The night belonged to rookie Mike Tolomia. He scored 24 points, which included a perfect 6-for-6 shooting from the three-point territory. He too is excited on what RDO brings to the team.
“Sobrang swerte naming na nakakuha kami ng ganung player na beterano na stretch four na nakakalaro sa labas,” said Tolomia. “Kailangan talaga namin siya.”
