BaliPure recovered from a slow start as the Water Defenders edged the Creamline Cool Smashers, 22-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-21,yesterday to move to within a win from nailing a final berth in the Premier Volleyball League women’s tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
American import Jennifer Keddy powered the Water Defenders with her all-around game, making 24 points, highlighted by 13 kills, five blocks, and six service aces.
And it was in the fourth frame when Keddy shone the brightest by firing back-to-back aces to shove BaliPure at matchpoint, 24-17.
But Creamline refused to give up by scoring four straight points before Aiko Urdas sealed the win with a smashing spike.
Risa Sato also stepped up for the Water Defenders with 13 points including three blocks, while Grethcel Soltones fired 11 points, all from the attack line.
Alyssa Valdez and Thai spiker Kuttika Kaewpin were limited to 16 and 12 points, respectively.
So dominating was BaliPure that it outplayed Creamline in attacks, 50-42; blocks, 12-6, and service aces, 10-9.
Earlier, Army and Sta. Elena stunned their fancied rivals to move closer to a title clash.
The fourth-seeded Army Troopers turned to Romnick Rico, Lemuel Arbasto and Benjaylo Labide in beating the top seeded Air Force Jet Spikers, 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 25-20, even as the Sta. Elena Wrecking Balls outsteadied the Cignal HD Spikers, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22, 30-28, in Game 1 of their respective best-of-three semifinal series.
