“I’m not looking to replace him. It’s hard to replace a guy of that stature and talent,” Isaiah said of Blatche as the talks of him being the next naturalized player for Gilas Pilipinas intensifies.
Isaiah Austin may or may not be naturalized to play center for Gilas Pilipinas.
That process takes a long time and even though Austin looks like he’s all for it, nothing is set in stone as of right now.
What is set in stone right now though, is the fact that Andray Blatche remains as Gilas Pilipinas’ first option for international tournaments.
However, Blatche is not available all the time and is getting there in age, hence the need for national team to start looking at a possible replacement.
Enter 23-year-old, 7’1″ Isaiah Austin who will get his first reps for the Chooks-to-Go backed Team Pilipinas in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup in less than a week.
If Chooks-to-Go does well, a matchup against Blatche’s Chinese club team is possible in the later rounds of the Champions Cup.
That should be interesting.
Regardless of what the future holds, Austin is in the country just to play ball for Chooks-to-Go and not replace Andray Blatche for Gilas Pilipinas.
“I’m not looking to replace him. It’s hard to replace a guy of that stature and talent,” Isaiah said of Blatche.
“I’m just trying to come out here and play Isaiah Austin basketball,” he added.
While he’s not looking to replace Blatche, Austin does look forward to playing the current Gilas reinforcement.
If things go well, the Austin-led Chooks-to-Go team will take on Blatche’s Chinese club in the later rounds of the Champions Cup.
“It’s always great to play against a guy of his caliber, just because he’s such a great player. I’ll be able to learn a lot from him and I feel like if I play well, I’ll prove myself to a lot of people,” Austin said.
