I remember my first day of kindergarten quite clearly: I was a really shy kid, terrified of going to school with a sea of strangers, and when my mom tried to leave me, I burst into tears and refused to let her go. Then, she made me a promise: if I went to school like a good little girl, she would take me to ShoeMart (as SM was known at the time) and buy me a pair of shoes.
The bribe worked like magic and I promptly went to class! As a shoe mecca, SM has come through for many other milestones through the years—the perfect pair of suede Parisian heels for prom, smart black pumps for a job interview, endless pairs of (Spartan!) sneakers, assorted sandals as personal rewards for a job well done or salve for heartbreak… Who can relate? Of course, part of the charm of shopping at SM was hearing the salesladies call out your item request in secret shoe-speak with matching sign language, then watching boxes drop down from the stockroom with a satisfying thud, carrying a pair in your size plus one in a half size larger for you to try on.
SM has definitely come a long way since Henry Sy opened his first shoe store in 1958, and while continuing to expand phenomenally, it comes full circle by opening Simply Shoes, a one-stop shoe shop carrying a wide array of SM Store brands (including Parisian, Salvatore Mann, Tough Kids, and Sugar Kids). Envisioned as a “family shoe store in local communities,” Simply Shoes brings the shoe mecca experience to more areas, making it easier to get your shoe fix especially if you don’t live near an SM. Since opening their first branch at Waltermart in Tanauan, Batangas in September 2014, Simply Shoes has opened 27 branches across the country, from as far north as Savemore La Trinidad in Benguet, to as far south as Citymall Tagum in Davao del Norte, and aim to have a total of 100 stores.
To establish their image as a shoe store for the whole family,
Simply Shoes recently introduced us to their new brand ambassadors—actress Cristine Reyes-Khatibi, her husband Ali Khatibi, and their daughter Amarah. “It’s the one-stop shoe shop for all family members,” says Christine, who enjoys shopping at Simply Shoes with her own family. Ali also shares that he goes for the simple, classic styles, while Cristine shops for heels for work, flats for downtime, and cute children’s shoes for adorable Amarah. “Simply Shoes has every kind of shoe we need. It’s very stylish, comfortable, and ang pinaka-importante dito, ang value for money,” attests Cristine. She especially loves making a beeline for the specials section that offers 2 pairs for only P499.75! And launching soon: the BFF—sale bundles for the family!
