Ateneo, NU both improve to 4-0 in UAAP juniors

MANILA, Philippines – Joint leaders National University and Ateneo de Manila University both stayed perfect in the UAAP Season 80 juniors basketball tournament after beating their respective foes on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

The Bullpups bested Adamson University, 94-82, while the Blue Eagles crushed University of the East, 97-47, as both squads improved to 4-0 in the first round.

Terrence Fortea shot 26 points while Rhayyan Amsali added 14 points, 12 rebounds and four assists as NU remained undefeated under new coach Goldwyn Monteverde.

Joaquin Manuel, younger brother of former University of the Philippines star Jett, sustained his solid play for Ateneo with 15 points, eight boards, two steals and two assists while SJ Belangel chipped in 13 points, seven assists and five rebounds.

In other results, University of Santo Tomas took solo third place after edging defending champion Far Eastern University, 83-79, in overtime for a 3-1 win-loss record.

John Cansino had another double-double effort of 29 points and 11 rebounds as the Tiger Cubs rebounded from last Sunday’s 85-89 loss to the Bullpups.

RJ Abarrientos’ 16-point, seven-rebound, six-assist outing went for naught, as the Baby Tamaraws have lost two in a row after opening the season with two straight victories.

La Salle-Zobel entered the win column following a 79-73 conquest of UP Integrated School.

Chris Calimag had 18 points while Raven Cortez added 17 points and seven assists as the Junior Archers forged a three-way tie with the Junior Maroons and the Baby Falcons at 1-3.

The Junior Warriors are now the only winless team, having dropped all of their four assignments.
