MANILA, Philippines — Two of the greatest rivals in Philippine sports are joining forces for the benefit of the Filipino youth, as former and current women’s volleyball players of De La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila University are set to play a charity game on July 16 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Rebisco-backed event aims to raise funds for the scholarship programs of the Ateneo de Manila University Foundation, the De La Salle University Foundation, and the Rebisco Foundation, Inc.
Leading the Lady Spikers are Mika Reyes and two-time UAAP Best Setter Kim Fajardo, who will be teaming up with former UAAP MVPs Abigail Maraño and Ara Galang, former Finals MVPs Cha Cruz and Michele Gumabao, and defensive stalwarts Melissa Gohing and Cyd Demecillo.
In the Ateneo side, superstar Alyssa Valdez and celebrated setter Jia Morado are poised to lead the charge. They will get a boost from Ella de Jesus, Dennise Lazaro, Amy Ahomiro, and current UAAP standouts like Maddie Madayag and Jhoana Maraguinot.
The special match, announced in a press conference Monday at Buffalo Wild Wings in Pasig City, will be in the usual best-of-five format.
Ateneo and La Salle have contested the UAAP women’s volleyball championship for the past five seasons, with the Lady Spikers winning in Seasons 74, 75, 78 and 79, and the Lady Eagles winning back-to-back crowns in Seasons 76 and 77.
