We go hands-on with the ZenBook Flip S!
Aside from that deliciously affordable VivoBook S, ASUS also announced their flagship notebook yesterday, the ZenBook Flip S. It’s currently being billed by ASUS as the thinnest and lightest 2-in-1 in existence, and after spending quite a bit of time with it, we’re inclined to believe them. The ZenBook Flip S is a glimpse of the thin-and-light future that ASUS is envisioning for PCs moving forward, and is the blueprint that many of their products will follow in the coming months.
Initial Impressions: thinner and lighter than a MacBook Air
As with any of ASUS’ flagship notebooks, the ZenBook Flip S gets the premium aluminum body treatment from the get go. Its design isn’t too far off from the ZenBook 3 that we reviewed last year, as the ZenBook Flip S sports an aluminum lid and chassis, gold accents as well as the company’s now iconic Zen-inspired concentric circle design on the lid.
What makes the ZenBook Flip S stand out from its other, premium brethren is its overall dimensions: at just 10.9mm thick and 1.1 kilos, the ZenBook Flip S is the thinnest and lightest 2-in-1 in existence today. Apple’s MacBook Air, often the yardstick that other companies use to measure their products look bloated in comparison, coming in at 17mm and 1.35 kilos. The difference in dimensions is astounding.
So what makes the ZenBook Flip S different from other ultrabooks in the market today (aside from being extremely thin)? The fact that the display can rotate almost 360 degrees and transform the notebook into a Windows 10 tablet. Granted, the 13-inch ZenBook Flip S is a little big to be used as a tablet, but if you fork over cash for the optional Stylus for it (that can recognize 1,024 levels of force) , you can use it as a large canvas to write on.
Speaking of the display, the ZenBook Flip S comes with a 13.3-inch 4K display that has thin 6.11mm side bezels. The panel looks sharp and is easy on the eyes.
Just like its other products, ASUS gives customers a slew of options when purchasing the ZenBook Flip S: you can get it in either Intel Core i5/i7 processor, up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of PCIe SSD storage. Whatever version you pick, the ZenBook Flip S keeps everything inside the chassis cool via a tiny, custom made 0.3mm liquid-crystal-polymer fan.
Obviously ASUS’ quoted $1099 (Php 54.6K) starting price for the ZenBook Flip S is for the lowest specc’d variant – its price will go up the better the specs you choose, and you can expect to pay top dollar for the highest variant.
