Arjo Atayde has two words to describe his mother Sylvia Sanchez: Loving and protective.

Arjo Atayde

Talking to some members of the press recently, the actor recalled how his mother would treat him like a “baby,” including “interrogating” him every time he comes home late.

“Sobrang matanong siya eh. Ibang klase siya mag-interrogate before,” he said.

“I remember may isang time na umuwi ako ng madaling araw, high school pa ata ako nu’n. Eh takot ako sa multo, ang dilim. Tapos biglang may bumukas na parang lampara, nakaupo siya (Sylvia) tapos nakatingin ng pagalit sa akin sabay tanong ‘Saan ka galing?’”

He once considered her “mabubunganga,” but on hindsight, Arjo acknowledged it helped mold him into the man he has become.

“She’ll do everything to find out what you are doing but at the same time, she’ll do everything to make you feel loved,” he said.

The actor said Sylvia can be a cool mom at times.

“Nagkukulitan din kami. Minsan masaya, minsan seryoso. Depende siguro sa mood niya,” he said, laughing.

How is it working with his mother?

Turning serious, Arjo disclosed, “We talk about personal stuff on the set also. Mga random things na hindi connected sa show. But more importantly, we’re having fun like each and everyone does.”

Working with her is a dream come true for him.

“Hindi pa actually nagsi-sink in sa akin. I can’t find for words eh, but I’m very excited (to work with her).”
The challenge for Arjo is to let the audience see a different mother-son tandem on the show.

“I take this as part of my journey as an actor. I enjoy each and every moment.”

Transition

Before “Hanggang Saan,” Arjo played kontrabida character Joaquin on “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” so playing good bou now is a breath of fresh air.

“I’ve been in the industry for six years now and halos lahat ng role ko, palaging intense. Laging mabigat na kontrabida,” he said. “Now, medyo unexpected kasi kailangan maging playful ako dito sa teleserye para maiba ’yung imahe ko.”

Joining Arjo and Sylvia on the new series is Yves Flores.

Arjo expressed gladness working with the neophyte actor saying, “Isa siya sa mga actor na mas bata sa akin but I’m looking forward to work with. Ever since pumasok ako sa ABS-CBN, naging kaibigan ko na siya. Sabi ko nga noon, sana maka-trabaho ko siya. Now I’m really glad na mangyayari na ’yun.”

Arjo is confident of Yves’ acting prowess, maintaining he could be the next big name in show business.

“I’m happy finally may nag-open na door for him. Ang goal namin with this show is hindi lang kami ang mapansin but for everyone to reach the top,” he explained. “With Yves, alam kong magaling siya. I will put my name on the line for this guy, so let’s see.”

Also in the cast are Ariel Rivera, Maris Racal, Marlo Mortel, Nikko Natividad, Rommel Padilla, Anna Luna, Mercedes Cabral, and Teresa Loyzaga, among others.

Under the helm of Mervyn Brondial and Jeffrey Jeturian, “Hanggang Saan” airs on Kapamilya Gold.
