Air Force foiled newcomer Mega Builders’ sweep bid, pulling off a pulsating 25-16, 25-20, 23-25, 26-28, 15-12, victory yesterday to close out its elimination round campaign on a high note in the men’s division of the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.
With a 5-2 card, the Jet Spikers finished at No. 3 with the Volley Bolt gaining the top seed in the Final Four despite the loss with a 6-1 slate. Cignal TV, with a 5-1 mark, will take the second spot even if it drops its final elims game today against Instituto Estetico via the winner-over-the-other rule.
The HD Spikers swept the Jet Spikers in their duel last July 12.
Nino Jeruz and Edwin Tolentino led Air Force with 20 and 19 hits, respectively, while Howard Mojica and Jeffrey Malabanan chipped in 14 and 13 points, respectively, for the Jet Spikers, who will square off with the HD Spikers in the semis.
Meanwhile, Perlas-BanKo and BaliPure seek to stay in the semifinal hunt as it takes on Creamline and defending champion Pocari Sweat at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively, at the close of the elims today.
Tied at fourth at 3-3, the BanKo Spikers and the Water Defenders need to hurdle their fancied rivals to force a three-way tie for third with Air Force.
But Creamline is out to complete its sweep while Pocari Sweat wants to go to the semis on a winning note, making today’s matches doubly interesting.
