Eight people were killed Sunday after the motor banca they were riding in capsized in Binangonan, Rizal.
Undersecretary Ricardo B. Jalad, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) executive director and concurrent Office of Civil Defense (OCD) administrator, identified the fatalities as Jean Wilfred Orteza, Fredirick Orteza, Rolino Pareño, Marylou B. Papa, Demaret Mendoza, Malou Gimena, Weldie Pareño and Jaiannah Jensine Pareño.
Jalad said that based on reports they received, the tragedy took place off the waters located in Sitio Wawa, Barangay Libis, Binangonan, Rizal at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
It was learned that the motor banca with 13 passengers on board was on its way to “Dimatawaran” fish pond in Sitio Wawa when it capsized.
The OCD CALABARZON immediately coordinated with the Binangonan Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Laguna de Bay, who conducted a rescue operation.
The said passengers were then brought to Margarito Duavit Hospital in Barangay Darangan in Binangonan.
Unfortunately, eight of the 13 passengers were declared dead on arrival while the rest managed to survive.
