Two battalions from the AFP’s Engineering Brigade will be sent to Marawi City once the fighting is over to help in the rehabilitation of the city.
Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesman, said that the engineering battalions’ main task will be to help in the rehabilitation of the city destroyed as a result of intense fighting between government troops and Maute fighters.
“The AFP chief of staff has directed the mobilization of engineering units…Yes, they (Engineering Battalions) are preparing already and in fact there are already some members of Engineering there,” he said.
He added that the rehabilitation of the city cannot be done by the AFP alone. It has to be a whole of government doing the rehabilitation, reconstruction and rebuilding.
“So we will work hand in hand with everyone else but we can provide the lead initially, until such time that the whole of government and other agencies can help.” he added.
Padilla said though it’s hard to give any estimate on when the fighting would be over, he said that “time is getting nearer.”
“(With) each day, we are getting closer to totally liberating Marawi because we continually are working to degrade the capacity of the enemy to hold onto space… to hold on to their spaces and at the same time sustain their fight,” he added.
