A TOTAL of 15 municipalities in the province of Iloilo are now competing in the 1st Province of Iloilo Sports Developmental League which formally opened at the Iloilo Sports Complex (ISC) covered court, May 23, 2017.
The two-week sporting event which ends on June 4, 2017 aims to strengthen the grassroots programs of the province and discover potential skills of young Ilonggo athletes.
Players from the towns of Alimodian, Ajuy, Barotac Nuevo, Cabatuan, Dumangas, Guimbal, Lemery, Leganes, Miagao, Passi City, Pototan, Oton, Sara, Leon, and Bingawan will be tested in different sports disciplines such as volleyball, basketball, badminton, tennis, table tennis, football, and chess.
Passi City has the most number of delegates with 154 players in all events.
Bingawan is also a force to reckon with as it sent its powerhouse volleyball team which joined the recent Plagata Cup.
The Sara Warriors are expected to wreak havoc in basketball boys.
During the opening ceremony, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. said he hopes that the Sports Developmental League will give more exposure to the players and make ready them for bigger competitions.
“I am happy that this league was push through this year. I hope that these kids will be trained more and be developed through the help of this competition. Who knows, the first Olympic gold medalist might come from Iloilo,” Defensor added.
Present in the opening program were municipal leaders of the participating towns.
Sports Development and Management Office chief Ma. Janelyn Fundal and Executive Director of the Center for Sports and Physical Fitness Raymundo Lapating also graced the affair.
Lapating said they allotted P14 million for the league which will be played simultaneously at the ISC covered court and ISC open grounds.
Aside from the two venues, players will get the chance to show their skills in their hometown as organizers mounted out-of-town games for basketball, volleyball, and football.
Fundal said they are planning to put up Wi-Fi connection around the ISC for easy access to the internet.
“Aside from the proposed internet connection, we are also happy to announce that we will build and improve additional badminton court, tennis posts, and basketball facility,” Fundal added.
