Mary Ann Mungcal must’ve gotten tired walking back many times to center stage the night the Miss Global Philippines 2017 finals was held at the Newport Performing Arts Theater of Resorts World Manila.
Not only did she make a near sweep of the sponsors’ and special awards (including the much coveted Best in Swimsuit and Best in Long Gown awards) but, most importantly, Mungcal clinched the title, too, from a batch of 21 hopefuls.
Every victory was signalled by the announcement of her assigned number: 15.
In an interview held a few days after her big night, Mungcal said she wasn’t expecting anything as she only placed runner-up in the previous pageant she joined.
“This is my first international pageant win,” she said. “I was surprised but happy.”
Last year’s Miss Global Philippines title holder, Camille Hirro, on hindsight, had an inkling Mungcal would do well come coronation night.
“She was always so energetic – up early in the morning for the activities and always looking fresh,” Hirro recalled.
Mungcal will compete with 59 other beauties from all over the world when Miss Global is held in Cambodia by end of October. Till then, she will continue to train under Kagandahang Flores with help from Hirro and organizers of Miss Global Philippines.
Time is ticking but everyone involved is confident Mungcal will deliver.
“Miss Global has never had a winner from Asia,” reigning queen Angela Bonilla noted. “The Filipinos are very strong candidates, always in the Top 5, but no one from the region has brought home the crown.”
Hirro pointed out that Mungcal has the advantage of being photogenic, which, she said, is a big plus in the contest. Of course, they will focus on the other aspects as well, particularly the question and answer portion and stage projection.
“As you can see, she’s very sweet and soft-spoken for now. The training will help her. She will be the total package by then,” Hirro said to that effect.
Mungcal is more than willing to go the distance – even through the wringer – to make her loved ones and the Filipinos proud. She said her advocacy of helping needy children by providing them food and clothes also gives her the drive to succeed.
Surprisingly, when asked if she is interested in joining show business like so many other beauty queens before her have done, Mungcal said it’s not on top of her priorities.
Still, if she changes her mind down the road, there’s one actor she’d like to work with.
“Piolo Pascual,” she cooed then giggled.
